Chapter 14

While we chatted this afternoon and the girls drank gin, I had been working out how I could turn things around. It was basic military strategy: do what the enemy is not expecting. Another great strategy is to hit them so hard and so constantly, and with such violence that they crawl back into their holes and never come out again. My first hurdle was not knowing where to find my enemy and that was why I had chosen to wait for dark.

I was guessing, if I am being honest, that the shilt would return once darkness fell. I had only seen them at night, not that two incidents could be called a trend. It was what I had to go on and my plan was to listen for their voices and then find them. I felt confident, after this afternoon’s practice, that I could produce the energy balls at will. I would trap one of them and force it to tell me where Cowl was. And who he was. And, if I could beat it out of the unfortunate shilt, what Cowl’s weaknesses are and how to beat him.

Another reason to wait for dark, was so I could sneak back to Sarah’s flat. I would first need to call Sarah and try to reason with her about the flat and my innocence because I needed her to confirm there weren’t still cops waiting outside in the street. I could speak with DS Spencer again another day. I really wasn’t in the mood right now. If I thought he would listen to me and act on the information I had, I would be all over him, but I knew he wouldn’t.

Abigail had asked if I was waiting for something and when I shrugged, rather than explain I was still avoiding the police, she sat back down. ‘Are you waiting for dark so you can go hunting creatures like Buffy the Vampire Slayer? Because if you are, I’m coming with you.’

‘Me too,’ said Alex, bumping Abigail with her hip and sitting down too, all excited again at the prospect.

Doing my best to look innocent I lied to them. ‘No ladies, I am just going to finish my drink and wander home. I’ll see you in work tomorrow though, yes?’ Now they look disappointed, the prospect of adventure denied just as swiftly as they imagined it. ‘Hey, Alex, thanks again for earlier.’

I got a nod and a smile. ‘You’re welcome.’ Then both women crossed the bar and went out the door. Alone in the booth, I closed my eyes and concentrated. The sun was setting but not down yet so listening for the voices of the shilt might be pointless. I didn’t know for certain either way but a rap on the table made me jump.

I flinched back and felt myself automatically open the palm of my right hand as adrenalin pushed me into fight mode.

There were four middle-aged women in business attire holding glasses of wine. ‘Can we have your booth?’ one asked.
